Every baby deserves a healthy start

Healthy Start is a statewide prevention program, and Kids Central is the managing entity in Hernando, Lake, and Alachua Counties. The goal of the Healthy Start program is to reduce infant mortality, reduce the number of low birth weight babies, and improve health and developmental outcomes.

There is no specific definition of a “high-risk” pregnancy however, it involves either a woman or baby that is more likely than usual to become ill or die or are more likely to experience complications before or after delivery.Certain characteristics make a pregnancy high risk. Doctors identify these risk factors to determine the degree of risk so they can provide better medical care.

It’s never too late or too early to receive a screening for Healthy Start services.  You can ask your obstetrician or health care provider at your initial visit upon learning of your pregnancy or you can ask your nurse for a Healthy Start Postnatal Infant Screening before you go home from the hospital.
