The MBTI is the world’s most effective and widely used psychological instrument for indicating personality styles and preferences.
In our changing world, work place teams are increasingly varied and complex. The Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a natural tool for professionals because it is based on the premise that we all have unique gifts to offer and challenges to overcome. Applying the MBTI indicator to teams and teambuilding provides us with the understanding to make that happen. We can address core issues affecting the workplace today; communication, culture, leadership, change, problem solving/conflict resolution, and stress.
Kids Central as a private provider of social services in a 5 county area in central Florida has been involved with the MBTI since 2006, incorporating it in Supervisor Training and teambuilding.
Supervisors participate in the MBTI on their first day of training. The MBTI allows the participant to gain a clear picture of their own personality type and distinguish the other personality types they will encounter throughout life and work. The MBTI is a key component to the training as it allows the Supervisor to look inside themselves to discover what has made them successful in the past and how they can use their strengths to develop leadership skills. They are given a framework in which they can develop strategies when working with others. Professionals who are aware of and appreciate personality differences are better able to communicate with team members, gaining higher morale and productivity, and ultimately better outcomes. The ideal amount of time for a session varies depending on the issues and requirements of the agency and/or team. Teambuilding sessions may last from one to several days. As the interpretation and verification of MBTI assessment results necessitate at a minimum half a day (more time may be needed if the assessment is to be administered during the session). The ideal number of people for a session is six to ten. Having a smaller group allows more time for process and interaction. Having more than ten participants typically requires the use of less interactive, more scripted format. It is recommended that teambuilding sessions take place away from the work site. This will reduce interruptions and minimize the tendency for team members to go back to their desk to work on breaks.
